Painful buttocks: use an anti-hemorrhoid cushion

About half of the population faces hemorrhoid problems before the age of 50.

Hemorrhoid flare-ups are characterized by the inflammation of blood vessels located in the lower part of the rectum. They cause itching, pain, and significant discomfort in the seating area.

What causes hemorrhoids?

The main causes of hemorrhoid flare-ups are linked to lifestyle, diet, and a lack or excess of physical exercise.

This can involve prolonged sitting, carrying the weight of a baby during pregnancy, being overweight, or lifting heavy loads, to name just a few examples. The excess pressure caused by these situations leads to an accumulation of blood in the veins located along the anal wall, which eventually causes them to swell.

Why use a hemorrhoid cushion

The pain caused by hemorrhoids can be particularly distressing. Using a specially designed seat cushion provides appreciable relief by reducing the pressure exerted when you are sitting.

This type of cushion reduces direct pressure on the area by distributing body weight evenly around the sensitive zone, without creating excessive pressure points. This redistribution is also associated with better local circulation, which supports daily comfort.

There are different types of cushions with various shapes and materials, each meeting specific needs: hemorrhoids, anal fissures, post-operative recovery, episiotomy, pressure sores, tailbone pain, sciatica, and back and lumbar pain.

The best hemorrhoid cushions

These cushions are over-the-counter products available at an affordable price.

The donut cushion

Named for its shape, the donut cushion is the most common type. It is a round model with a hole in the middle, made of foam or inflatable.

Thanks to the central void, the anal area is no longer in contact with the seat, which relieves pressure on sensitive tissues. Using a hemorrhoid cushion in a donut shape provides rapid relief from pain and itching.

However, the lack of support in the central area means it is better not to use it all day, but only during a flare-up: prolonged use can actually increase discomfort in the long run.

The U-shaped orthopedic cushion

This type of orthopedic cushion is distinguished by a U-shaped cutout at the back, while offering good support. Thanks to this shape, only the perineal and sacrum areas are relieved of pressure, which is distributed evenly over the rest of the seat.

The lower back and legs then support your weight, rather than the perineal area. Our orthopedic cushions are made of memory foam covered in breathable velvet for optimal comfort and good air circulation.

With this natural supporting position, one can sit longer than with a donut cushion. Our orthopedic cushions help relieve the lower back in case of lumbar pain, tailbone pain, sciatica, or hemorrhoidal discomfort. The standard dimensions (28 × 22 × 4 cm) and the non-slip silicone base ensure good stability on an office chair.

There are different versions available, some suitable for cars, others promoting good posture in front of a screen, in gel or memory foam. The cover is machine washable at 30°C.

How to choose your cushion: materials, shape, and ergonomics

Several features are worth considering.

  1. Shape: donut or U-shaped cushions are the most recommended, as they minimize direct pressure on the sensitive area.
  2. Materials: inflatable models are the cheapest and easiest to carry. Gel or memory foam models offer superior comfort and better pressure distribution.
  3. Firmness: a cushion that is too soft or too thin will not provide the necessary support, while a cushion that is too firm or too thick risks increasing pressure.
  4. Size: for portable use, choose a lightweight model. For sedentary use, adapt it to the dimensions of your seat.
  5. Maintenance: opt for a removable and washable cover, which is essential for hygiene.
  6. Durability: quality materials ensure consistent support over time.

For optimal relief, we recommend using the hemorrhoid cushion as part of a comprehensive approach.

Complementary natural methods

Combining the hemorrhoid cushion with other simple actions is often the best approach. You can pair it with a portable bidet or a toilet sprayer for gentler hygiene, reducing the need for toilet paper, which can perpetuate irritation.

Thermotherapy

Hemorrhoids often occur within a broader circulatory context. Alternating heat and cold is the traditional reflex in these situations.

Cold sitz bath

Sitz baths and cold derivative baths are the most commonly used methods for hemorrhoidal discomfort. Like an ice pack on a bruise, cold soothes pain through numbing. It is also a vasoconstrictor: it constricts vessels and soothes the sensation of swelling. Use a sitz bath basin that fits directly onto your toilet, or a derivative bath gel pack that you can wear in your underwear all day long.

Cold gel cushion

The cooling gel cushion is ideal for relieving pressure and soothing with cold. It combines the benefits of a seat cushion and a sitz bath: the gel it contains generates a soothing sensation of freshness.

Heating pad and warm sitz bath

Once the initial swelling has been soothed by cold, heat takes over. You can use a heating pad or take a warm sitz bath at around 37-38°C. Heat dilates blood vessels (vasodilation) and promotes local circulation.

Warm gel packs are traditionally used for external thrombosed hemorrhoids, when blood clots in a swollen hemorrhoid. Caution: a hemorrhoidal thrombosis is very painful and warrants an immediate medical consultation—heat does not replace this medical care.

Our heat packs come in the form of microwaveable gel packs. They are versatile and turn into cold packs in the freezer. Always apply them with a layer of fabric or through clothing so as not to burn the skin.

A healthy lifestyle

Exercise regularly and adopt a balanced diet. Prefer gentle sports without excess: walking, jogging, hiking, or swimming.

Eat fresh products rich in fiber, with quality fruits and vegetables. Limit alcohol, tobacco, excess meat, and overly spicy foods.

Treatment creams

Witch hazel ointment or a cream recommended by your doctor or pharmacist can usefully complement these actions.

How often should you use the cushion?

The duration of use depends on the model, the intensity of your symptoms, and your lifestyle. In case of a temporary flare-up, or after an operation, a round cushion with a hole relieves pain temporarily, for occasional use.

On the other hand, if you have recurring symptoms and spend a lot of time sitting at work, prefer a U-shaped orthopedic cushion: you can set it up permanently on your seat and use it daily. The memory foam ensures prolonged comfort without excessive compression.

In all cases, avoid staying in a seated position for too long. Take regular breaks to walk and promote circulation.

How to sit when you have hemorrhoids?

Maintain a balanced posture: chest straight, neither too far forward nor too far back. Use a postural cushion to properly distribute pressure on your legs and lower back.

Avoid prolonged sitting: do not stay seated all day, even with a cushion. Similarly, standing for too long without moving is not ideal: favor movement.

Do not stay seated on the toilet longer than necessary. No reading or phone use: these are activities you can do elsewhere.

Use a physiological toilet stool: it raises your legs while on the toilet, which facilitates defecation and reduces the pressure exerted on the rectum.

How to stop having buttock pain?

To relieve your buttocks, choose an ergonomic cushion with adapted density, which effectively relieves pressure on the hips and spine. Such a cushion, both comfortable and designed for prevention, helps to limit pain and the risk of pressure sores.

Finally, in case of persistent symptoms, always ask for medical advice: consulting a healthcare professional will allow you to get an accurate diagnosis and choose a truly adapted cushion.

Seat cushions are comfort accessories. They do not replace medical advice or treatment.
